Oliver Lake to Messick Lake
Experience the hidden beauty of The Spreads! Paddle through three interconnected lakes—Oliver, Hackenburg, and Messick—while exploring ACRES protected lands from a unique vantage point.
This guided tour offers frequent wildlife-watching stops as we glide through diverse wetland habitats. Expect to see a variety of bird species, aquatic plants, and perhaps even turtles sunning themselves along the shore.
Event Details
- Meeting Location: Oliver Lake Public Access Site (parking in main lot)
- Route: Oliver Lake → The Spreads → Hackenburg Lake → Messick Lake Public Access Site
- Distance: Approximately 3 miles
- Duration: 2.5 – 3 hours on the water
- Difficulty: Intermediate (previous kayaking experience required)

Registration Options
- Kayak Rental + Lunch: $40 per person (includes single kayak, life vest, and catered lunch)
- Bring Your Own Kayak + Lunch: $15 per person (includes catered lunch only)
Rented kayaks provided by Mongo Trading Post and include life vests. Waiver required for rentals.
Please note: ACRES will only transport rented kayaks. If bringing your own, you may take the shuttle but will need to return to retrieve your kayak with your vehicle.
What to Bring
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen and hat
- Water-friendly clothing and shoes
- Waterproof bag or ziplock for phone, wallet, and keys
- Binoculars (optional)
Important Notes
- This trip is not recommended for first-time kayakers
- Designed for nature observation, not speed or distance
- Space is limited to 25 participants
- ACRES staff will assist with launching and landing kayaks
