Winter Creek Stomp offers rare view of spectacular gorge
It’s time to stomp the creek! Join our second Winter Creek Stomp event this Saturday, February 11, from 2-4 pm, at Hathaway Preserve at Ross Run located at 1866 E. Baumbauer Road, Wabash. The forever-protected preserve features a spectacular gorge with waterfalls, reef fossils, exposed bedrock and vertical cliffs as high as 75 feet.
“Last year, we had a blast tromping through thin sheets of ice, taking in partially-frozen 20-foot waterfalls, finding shells and fossils and enjoying this incredible place,” said Heather Barth, director of fund development for the nonprofit. “ACRES members especially love participating and sharing the adventure on the land they help to protect.”
Except for Creek Stomp events, the creek is off limits to hikers.

Partially frozen waterfalls were a highlight of our 2016 Winter Creek Stomp. What will we discover this year?
ACRES, Indiana’s oldest and largest local land trust, opens the creek up for exploration only by permit and during creek stomp events. Throughout the year the creek is off limits to hikers who must stay on the preserve trails to protect the natural area. Winter Creek Stomp is hosted by Executive Director Jason Kissel and family.
On this terrain are mature oaks, some with trunks over four feet in diameter, as well as a diverse under story and a remarkable display of spring wildflowers. The Ross Run gorge is an impressive natural feature with uncommonly high geological, ecological and aesthetic values.
